The first UK death from AIDS in London was in 1981. There were no specific Haringey policies dealing with the impact of AIDS on LGBT+ people in the borough but, like many others in the 1980s, Vince was personally affected by the deaths of people close to him from AIDS.

There was no specific LGBT+ group supporting the UK miners’ strike of 1984-85 like the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners. However, Vince was still involved in collecting money to support miners in Haringey’s Bruce Grove area.

After a Labour meeting where Vince voted in favour of positive images, there was an attempted attack on him. Bernie Grant, , arranged for him to stay with Bob Cant for a while, who was a prominent Haringey LGBT+ activist.
